Cylon Fuel Tankers

Whilst I work on the battle report regarding my road test of the Full Thrust SSD's for the Battlestar and Basestar, here's some Cylon eye candy. These were originally from Ravenstar Studio's, however I have seen some other versions available on Etsy.

Colonial Proving Grounds Scenario - A Full Thrust scenario for original series Battlestar Galactica

I wanted to run a scenario using the community made Full Thrust Project Continuum ruleset. The scenario is designed to test out my new SSD's for both the original series Colonial Battlestar and Cylon Basestar. The background would be as a simulation for the Colonial Navy to test out its new prototype Battlestar concept. So, for the purist, this would mean that the scenario would be set some 500 yarn prior to the original series of Battlestar Galactica, which is when the Galactica was built (if I remember correctly).

Engines to full thrust!

The set-up is a simple face-off against a single Colonial prototype battlestar (Battlestar Rycon), and a single Cylon Basestar. The ships begin at either end of the table and see who walks away at the end of the day. No fighters are involved in this scenario as its designed to test the ship SSD's against one another.

Ahhhh...I think I see him Skipper...

The battle area is open space. So no obstacles to impede movement or targeting.

Set up at opposite ends and at the sound of the hooter, charge!

The protagonist (booo! booo!)

Prototype Battlestar Rycon (Yeah!)

Shedding a little light on the subject.

As this is a solo game, so as to test out the SSD's before putting to sea in a proper match, I need a way to randomise the movements and speed of the Cylon Basestar. The first Movement Phase I will plot out for both sides, but after that, I want to randomise the movements of the Cylon ship in order to simulate facing off against an opponent. When it comes to the Shooting Phase, both sides will open up with everything they have in arc of their opponent. So no secrets there.

So here's what I came up with...

Cylon Movement - Using a GW target dice, movement for the Cylons is determined by a die roll at the beginning of the Movement Phase.

ON COURSE - No change in speed or heading from previous turn

INCREASE SPEED - Speed is increased up to the maximum thrust (i.e. Thrust 4). A 1d4 is rolled to determine the speed increase.

REROLL - This symbol is not used in this scenario but could be used for clocked equipped ships (in other games) to represent orders to Cloak or Uncloak.

COURSE CHANGE - Change course to port or starboard, up to the maximum turn rate (i.e. up to a 2 point Turn). Direction is determined by a standard 1d6 die roll, odds is Starboard, evens is Port. Turn rate is determined by using 1d4 (1-2 = 1 point, 3-4 = 2 points).

DECREASE SPEED - Reduce speed by up to the maximum thrust (i.e. Thrust 4). A 1d4 is rolled to determine the speed decrease this turn.

REROLL -  This symbol isn't used in this scenario and so the die is rerolled if this symbol comes up on the roll.

Stay tuned for the Battle Report on this scenario!

Happy Easter

1 Corinthians 15:3-8 (NIV)

3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance[a]: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas,[b] and then to the Twelve. 6 After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8 and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

Footnotes

  1. 1 Corinthians 15:3 Or you at the first
  2. 1 Corinthians 15:5 That is, Peter

May I wish you and your family a Happy and peaceful Easter.

Baroness for D&D

This mini is a Reaper Miniatures sorceress (in metal casting). I've just finished painting her up to be the Baron's new fiancée in our current D&D campaign. The PC's are trying to rescue her after a ship wreak. You saw some photos of that escapade in my previous post (see here).

The reason I wanted to post this particular miniature is that its the first time I have actually been able to paint the eyes on a mini. Usually, I leave them as blank spaces where the black undercoat shows through. Painting eyes has eluded me. But this is the first time I have had actual success with painting them on a 28mm miniature. So I thought I would show it off here. I like how its turned out.

Showing off my 'el cheapo terrain for D&D

I have been taking my players through a heavily modified version of the Dungeon Crawl Classics adventure Shadow Under Devils Reef. I've made a lot of changes to the adventure, keeping the bare bones of the outline and modifying the maps to my needs and the overall setting. Anyway, I knew they were going to get to this adventure soon'ish (we played session 2 last night) and so made suitable terrain for it all well ahead of time, including caves, rocks and the island itself.

Unfortunately, Blogger now has an annoying habit of loading images backwards these days and I'm not going to be bothered fixing their mistake. Sorry dear reader! So as you look through these photos you should remember to start at the end and work backwards to the beginning. Anyway, as the players arrive at the reef after a harrowing attempt to rescue the survivors of a ship wreck, beating Great White Sharks to the rescue (hint, of the eight initial survivors in the water, the team rescued only two, the rest were dinner!), they make it (just) to the reef itself after their boats are nearly destroyed by a tentacle beasty hiding in the small bay. They drag themselves ashore and two PC's stay behind to look after one of the rescued sailors (i.e. those players weren't able to join us for Session 2 and so ended up on baby sitting duties awaiting the rescue ship). The players who were able to make it last night then needed to make their way around to the ship wreck and look for any survivors, eventually ending up underground.

The key thing I wanted to point out is that, with the exception of the miniatures, the Cog and the dear moss that acts as bleached coral, everything else is made from cardboard, toilet paper, and white glue. I used river sand here as well. Amazing what you can do on the cheap. Hat's off to the inspiration provided by DM Scotty's YouTube channel DM's Craft. I did a blog post on it here. Anyway, I'm no craftsmen. This was the first time I have done any of this and it looked really nice on the table for the players. I just wanted to share this to hopefully inspire others and spur them on to give this kind of thing a go as well.
