MOAB 2024 - Mother of All Battles is on this long weekend - part 1

The main hall of MOAB 2024

MOAB is back this long weekend, and I spent waaaaay too much money there. I could have spent a lot more too.

This post, part 1 of 2, will focus on MOAB itself and what was being played. In part 2, I'll show you want caught my eye (and subsequently caused me to spend too much on).

One thing is for sure though. MOAB is bigger than in previous years (see 2023 and 2022 posts), so this was very encouraging.

Chain of Command, a WW2 game

Chain of Command

A historical battle

There were more historical games being played this year, too. This one was Rome vs... someone, Alexander the Great, I think. It was a battle from 394 AD but stupid me cut the description note on the table from the photo when I took it. But it was several table lengths. So very impressive.

I began my wargaming journey with historical Greece and have always had a soft spot for ancient history battels. So, I am always glad to see such games being played.

Blood & Plunder

There were two participations games I saw. Blood & Plunder and Fjord Serpent. More on that second one below.

Shark!

Love the sharks

Blood Bowl

Blood Bowl had a strong showing. There were some very interesting teams fielded this year. Good to see players imaginations creating new and unique teams from different manufacturers.

The second participation game, which I missed out on playing, is a fantastic looking naval game with longships and Norse Vikings. What's not to love about that!

Called Fjord Serpent, it's a 10mm game funded through Kickstarter. The main web page is here. But you can still get in with a late pledge through Indiegogo here. It should begin shipping in November if I remember correctly.

Just have a look at these photos. This game looks amazing. I'm tempted to sneak in some more coin for this one as I love 10mm and I recon these lads could also fit on a 2cm x 4cm Warmaster base (I'm thinking magnetic) for use as a Norse army. Along with these longships, I think this would be great for Warmaster as well.

The dude on the right is the guy who developed the game and ran the demo.

Wee little Norse archers

Three different sizes of longship. Nice!

And of course, you've got to have plunder as a Viking raider

Yes, I did put the box back upside down and took the photo not realising...

The painting competition was very limited this year with entries. But the few that were there were amazing. Have a gander at these.

I didn't take photos of the other halls where games of Crisis Protocol were being played. The Old World was also being played in the Mezzanine of the main hall, and there were plenty of tables gearing up for the AOS and 40K tournaments. I didn't see any Kings of War being played, but there were some smaller halls I didn't visit so it may have been played there as its usually a favourite at MOAB.

Bring and Buy was packed and had a lot of interesting stuff. I spent too much there also.

Interestingly, I didn't see any Star Wars games being played. Given how a certain Mouse company has utterly destroyed the franchise, I'm not surprised. There was a lot of Star Wars X-Wing and Legion miniatures in Bring and Buy. So, I scored some stuff I had been after for a while on eBay. To use in GRUNTZ 15mm mind you, not Star Wars.

Alright. Part 2 will focus on the trade floor stuff that really caught my eye, including some really great stuff in 15mm from Slave2Gaming. Stay tuned for part 2.

15mm Alien Tyranid Zoanthrope

Not my best conversion ever, but it will do the job. This is my hack for a 15mm Zoanthrope miniature. I took a 10mm Pendraken Alien style miniature and cut off the arms and legs, bent the tail and did some filing to create a floating alien brain cell for use as a Zoanthrope for my growing 15mm Tyranid army for Gruntz.

This is mounted on a flat plastic 25mm base for reference to its size. Also, each square on the mat is 1cm.

You can see the original Pendraken model in these images. Being metal, just be careful bending the tail. You don't want it to snap off.

Works well enough. Think I'll make some more to curse the 15mm battlefields of the Gruntz future.
