Water Elementalist for D&D, a Wizkids Elf Mage

This Wizkids Elven Mage has been painted to represent one of the player's characters who is a Water Elementalist.

The water spiral comes clear and was easily coloured by using blue ink. It was a pain the get the miniature out of between the spell spiral in order to do the painting, but now that its done, I'm glad I did remove it for painting. It would have been a real pain to otherwise.

Mummies

 These lads are from Reaper Miniatures Bones line and are their cheap plastic models.

I painted them is the quickest possible manner: base coat in White Spray, ink in Agrax Earthshade. Simple! I tossed up the idea of painting their eyes, however they just seemed good enough as is for our D&D game, so I have left them alone. I have more of these in metal and will give the contrast paints go next time to compare the two. Once I get that done, I'll post about it as a way of comparison.

On to the next paint job.

Raston Warrior Robots

These come from Black Tree Design Miniatures.

Simple and sweet. Just a heavy dry brush of Gun Metal over a Chaos Black base. The heads are done with Silver. Easy! I did bend the arm of one of them to differentiate between the miniatures so that it looks like its pointing its hand weapon.

Letting Zygons be Zygons

 So lets discuss Zygons, shall we?

The dudes (? you can never tell with Zygons!) on the left are from Black Tree Design Miniatures, the ones of the right are from Warlord Games, Exterminate line of miniatures.

Perusing the interwebs for a decent colour image of the Zygons shattered my illusions from childhood (Terror of the Zygons! Soooo goood!) that they were orange in colour.

Seems they are more of a Rakath Flesh tone with more red highlights than orange. So I base coated these in Chaos Black. Wet brushed them Rakath Flesh. Inked them in Reikland Flesh Shade, and then finally gave them a drybrush of red (can't remember what type of red sorry).

These lads are a little too sunburnt though...

I expected the Warlord Games miniature to be larger than the Black Tree miniature, but this was not the case. So I ended up basing the Warlord miniature on a standard 25mm round base to bring them to the same height as the Black Tree miniatures.

Research Daleks

Research (i.e. Engineer) Daleks

I had it in my head that I wanted to make a specific group of Daleks that were dedicated to scientific research. These Daleks would need a different colour scheme to my other Daleks and so I decided to go with white in mimicry of them wearing white lab coats.

These are the Engineering Daleks from Black Tree Miniatures line of Classic Doctor Who.

I used Citadel White to paint them. Unfortunately I don't think that their white paint is the best as you can see from the photo's. Their "white" lab coat ends up looking the same tone as my old lab coat.

Mind you, my white paint tin may be getting a little old. So I will have to try buying a new one and give these fella's a little touch up. Overall, I think the paint scheme works OK and they are easily recognized from the other Daleks on the table. Now, on to the next project!

I've been a little Glom of late

 

This Glom'y miniature is from Reaper Miniatures and is a Glom (whatever the heck that is!). But it looks pretty good and worthy to include amongst my Vivimancer's minions. So I quickly painted one up.

Its a very nice miniature, as you can expect from Reaper. However it is on the small side. So don't expect a big model.

Now, on to the next painting project!

The first of the Vivimancer's experiments is now loosed upon the world!

 

Back in September last year I began experimenting around with some Vivimancy. That is, I started playing around with some of Mantic's Kings of War Zombies, some green stuff, and a glue gun. My dastardly plan was to make some horrid experiments for a Vivimancer boss protagonist for an upcoming D&D adventure.

You can see the original unpainted versions here. But until late I wasn't sure what paint scheme I wanted for them.

This one is the prototype paint scheme for the rest of the minions when I finish them.

I like to make my own monsters, and the stats for them, as it throws the players off balance. When they see a goblin, for example, I just describe the creature and don't give it a name. They can make a name up for themselves. But in this way the players are never sure as to what it is they are facing.

By keeping them guessing in this way, it keeps the game fresh and mysterious. They just can't be certain that the creature may not have some unusual ability. And usually in my games, they go!

For a Vivimancer minion it makes sense that he would be experimenting on the recently deceased, twisting and warping their bodies through chemicals, weird stone and forbidden magic. So the minions should look warped and recently departed.

So now to find some time to finish the others off. Keep and eye out for a post or two about that.
