Whirlpool for Uncharted Seas

I wanted to make a whirlpool for Uncharted Seas and so I set my mind to thinking how best to do that. I have some blank CD's that I've used for terrain and so decided that one of those would work well in forming the base.

I used PVA glue to create an uneven water base and the swirling effect of water being drawn down into the Whirlpool.

Once the first layer was dry I repeated the process by adding PVA glue to raised areas in the swirls of water. This I did three or four times, each time waiting until the glue had dried before doing the next level. I was careful to create an uneven feel so as to reflect individual waves being tossed in the maelstrom.

After this dried I base sprayed the whole think in Black Spray. As an afterthought I realised that I could use sand to reflect the foaming of the waves. So, again using PVA glue, I glued sand to the top of the waves. Once dry, I then base coated the sand in Black.

Above you can see the paints I used, in order from left to right. I painted the first two layers by wet brushing one after another and leaving some of the base coat black showing through. The final two paint colours were dry brushed on afterwards. Each application of paint was applied in a swirl so as to suggest the whirlpool's churning waters. The final images below show this process.

As a final act, I very lightly dry brushed the wave crests with White paint. So there you have it. Cheap and easy. All you need is a spare CD, PVA glue, the desired paints and a lot of patience as you watch glue and paint dry.

Another dead Dalek

Inspired by the scene in Death to the Daleks where the Exxilons manage to destroy a dalek, I decided to make one myself. The plan is to use it, and the other I've made already, as scenery pieces whenever a Dalek goes belly-up.

The Daleks get backup

Two silver Daleks guard the entrance ramp into the Dalek saucer

Given the large number of Movellans in the previous post the Daleks decided to get some backup. Two new silver Daleks as seen in Death to the Daleks.

The Movellans have also arrived

With the recent appearance of the Daleks there was also a need for an adversary to oppose them. So meet the Movellans.

Closer still

The three miniatures in the image above are Warlord Games miniatures (at 32mm). All the others are from Black Tree Design Miniatures and are 28mm's in size. Black Tree Design Movellans come in two poses. But being pewter I gently bent the arms to create some slightly different poses than just the generic two. The Warlord Games miniatures are also pewter and have a lot of detail from the Destiny of the Daleks episode.

Above is a size comparison between the two manufacturers. As the Warlord Games miniatures are taller, and are modeled on the Commander and his two lieutenants, it makes sense to use them as leader figures on the game table. The Commander has black beads around his hairdo, the rest have all silver hairstyles. So the larger size helps to distinguish them on the table at a distance.

For the Doctor Who Miniatures Game the Commander will have Leader (2) and 2 Hits. His subordinates will both have the Leader (1) ability but a single Hit.

"Don't move shorty!"

"You're about this tall."

Happy New Year and the Daleks have arrived

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

The first wave of Daleks have finally been finished.

These daleks have been painted in the Tom Baker era painting style. I've also touched up the Black Dalek as I wasn't happy with the previous paint job.

All are from Black Tree Design miniatures. These are very nice bad guys. Must paint more in the future but this little mob will for a good recon team for the Daleks.
